Hammarica.com Daily DJ Interview: Jay Junior
[wp_ad_camp_2]
Some people just have music running through their veins from their birth on. One of those people is taking the scene by storm under the name of Jay Junior. With over fourteen years of music experience Jay has started a brand new career in 2010 when a friend introduced him to the world of DJs and dance music. As Je’freak he started off as a percussionist who accompanied other artists with his rhythms and sounds, but soon the DJ booth became more attractive and within no time he had learned the tricks of the trade.
With performances at events such as Grotesque, Tres Chique and Summerlake in Holland and Open Air Festival in Poland his name began to rise and his sounds began to attract people. With his monthly podcast called Artfully Blended he now reaches people in all corners of the world who enjoy these live mixes. Give a warm welcome to JAY JUNIOR!
Describe your style and your influences.
Take a massive rolling bassline, some funky percussion rhythms and the ultimate “hands in the air” feeling. Combined with some awesome vocals now and then and there you go 🙂
When I’m behind the decks, I’m doing what I like the most, and that’s what I want to share. If they come for a party, they will get one.
How many tracks do you produce in a month and how many end up being released on average?
The last couple of weeks I’ve spent a lot of time to build a new studio. So I couldn’t produce anything. I try to produce at least 1 complete new track in a month. Of course I have started more projects, but in the end just a few will end up as a complete track.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
I think the best one was: Always believe in yourself. It’s easy when everything goes well but when you are struggling with something, then it’s important to remember your goals and believe in yourself.
Which style of EDM would you wish for to have a comeback?
Styles come and go, think I stick with the style I love most and that’s the style I’m playing and producing and loved from the first moment.
Skrillex should…
Go on with what he is doing. You don’t have to like his music to respect what he is doing.
Since you started out as being a percussionist, do you still add live percussion to your own DJ sets sometimes? And if not, would you like to try that out?
No I don’t add live percussion anymore, and that’s because I don’t like it anymore to be honest. And I think is has been done a lot, so it’s not really special anymore. I like to put all my energy in my mixing and the crowd. Like I said, that’s what I like the most.
Should people stop complaining about sync buttons and pre-made mixes and actually just enjoy music and a good party? Or not?
I can understand the discussions about sync buttons. In my opinion, if you use a sync button or Traktor just to play with 2 decks, then I don’t understand the meaning of it. If you can focus more on other things like effects, loops, playing 3 or 4 decks etc. because of the sync button, then I think you should do it. Anyway, it’s there, but it’s the way you use it I think.
Tell us about a random experience.
I had a gig 2 weeks a go. When the guy before me played his last track, he actually slowed down from 128 Bpm to 122 Bpm. So I had the “honor” to actually wake up the crowd again. I remember that I started with the Riva Starr Cut of Party Non Stop. I pitched it up till 126 again. And when the bassline came in it went off. From that moment on I knew they came to party, and they had one 🙂
What is the current hottest track on your memory stick?
I have a few:
Pirupa – Party Non Stop (Riva Starr Cut)
Jay Lumen – Not Like That
Fatboy Slim – Everybody Loves A Carnival (The Cube Guys & Analog People In A Digital World Remix)
And of course..
Jay Junior & Arturo Silvestre – Proksi.
Pizza or hamburgers after an after hours event?
Kebab!!! Definitely. I like it more than anything. You can wake me in the middle of the night for it 🙂
